What’s my motivation?

on December 21, 2011

I get a lot of people, especially women, that ask me; “What keeps you motivated?”  Or, “how do you keep the weight off?”  Or even better, “how do you find the time to work out?”  I wanted to take this time to let you know a little bit about what motivates me to try to be healthy.  To answer the latter question, it’s partly due to the fact that I am not married nor do I have any children.  Well, if you count my cats I have two…;)  I do believe though, that if I were married, or had children, I would try to fit a healthy lifestyle in there somewhere.

I can remember being asked why I was losing weight.  I thought for a second and couldn’t really come up with a solid answer.  I knew right then that I needed to check myself at the door and figure out what my motivations were.  Now I will tell you this, I like wearing a smaller size than I did 10 years ago, but what is it really that motivates me to get up out of bed to work out and make healthy decisions.  My friend that asked me that question had also lost a tremendous amount of weight, but her reasons were that her and her husband were wanting to get pregnant.  A few months after she asked me this question it dawned on me.  My motivation is that God has given me the ability to just pick up and go to other cities, states and countries at a moments notice, but I can’t do that with a 250 pound body.  I need to be healthy for what He has called me to do.  That is my motivation.

I wanted to give you some of the things that helps me to stay motivated.

  • I am surrounded by a loving family that support me.  So when I get down on myself or don’t want to push any further I am reminded by these people why I started this journey.
  • Keep my focus on what’s really important.  I try desperately not to compare myself to other women, but I am so guilty of that.  When I lose my focus this need to be like everyone else takes over.  These thoughts can also lead to binge eating, which is a hot mess!  I take a deep breath and try to focus my thoughts on positive things and I tell myself that I am not alone.
  • I just do it… I am so obsessive compulsive when it comes to things.  (ask my family)  When I start something I will always see it through.  This (a healthy lifestyle) is a goal that I will strive for throughout the rest of my life.
  • Exercise.  This one is not difficult for me.  In fact, I can over do it sometimes.  I know how I feel when I get finished with a great workout.  It makes me feel amazing!  I feel like I have accomplished something huge when I am finished.  Exercising always makes me feel balanced.  I am learning how to listen to my body when it gets over worked and take full advantage of my rest days.  I will do another post all together about how I stay enthused about working out.

I started reading the book, The Resolution for Women: by Priscilla Shirer.  It’s based upon the movie Courageous that came out a few months back.  Part one in the book is entitled, This is who I am, and the first chapter deals with not letting life just fly by without being apart of it.  Living your life, not just existing in it.   Think about the age that you are right now.  This is the only time that you will experience that age.  Enjoy every moment that is given to you.  Love your children.  Love your spouse.  It’s about finding true contentment without being stagnant.  I told a pastor of mine once that, “I just want God to change me completely!”  His response?? “Be careful, because He will do that.  The question will be, do you like what He wants you to be?”

I know it’s a lot to read, but I just wanted to share.

On to the last part of my day: it went by pretty fast and when 6:00 rolled around I was ready to head home.

My mid-morning snack today was:

Raspberry Greek Yogurt with some Pumpkin Flax Granola=Awesome!

Went to a local store where I live to pick up my green items and I saw this in the butter section.  Don’t worry, I didn’t purchase it.  It would have ruined!  Plus it was loaded with calories.

Welp, it’s almost 9:00 and I am pretty beat.  Have an awesome night!

Question:  If you are trying to live a healthy lifestyle, what motivates you?
