Statistically Speaking

on April 2, 2012

Hiya!  I hope your day is going super! Or should I say went…it is nearly 8:00! I am kicked back drinking some green tea.  Busy, but good day.  🙂

So I was up last night watching this program about obesity.  Well, I actually finished the show this morning.  🙂  Anyway, these two young people (girls) with a camera, go to Mississippi and follow these two sister that are severely obese and with numerous health issues.  High blood pressure, diabetes, High cholesterol, etc.

It was a really great show and  by the end of it the girls had some big decisions to make.

When it comes to being overweight, I know exactly how I got there.  It’s what I did after that changed my path forever.  I went searching for some facts about obesity and this is what I came up with:

Facts about Obesity in America

  • The maximum number of obese people are found in the United States.
  • Obesity among children has increased by 60 % among the adults.
  • Obesity among children has risen three times in the past thirty years.
  • Obesity related deaths have risen to 300,000 per year. This figure is  second to tobacco-related deaths.
  • Native Hawaiians suffer from heart disease, diabetes since they are obese.
  • The total number of obese children in Hawaii is twice the number of those in the entire United States.
  • Pima Indians who live in Arizona suffer from higher levels of obesity as compared to their Mexican counterparts, although they have the same genetic and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Many of the migrants to the United States suffer from higher levels of obesity as compared to their relatives back home.
  • Americans tend to have more fast-foods since they do no have the time to cook a wholesome meal. Their life-style is such that they do not have sufficient time to eat a nutritious meal. They eat hamburgers and have chips and French fries as their meal. Fast foods have become very popular all over America. Those who are working prefer to eat out as they have no time to cook.
  • Children  also do not play much outside and spend more time watching television. They also eat fast-foods and put on weight. They are made of saturated fats and carbohydrates which are highly refined. They contain a lot of sodium and sugar.
  • Americans also eat processed, refined foods which  are also not very healthy. Refined products contain a lot of sugar as well as hydrogenated oils which are very fattening.
  • Americans also consume a lot of dairy products such as cheese, butter etc which also increase fat. One must go in  for low-fat products although they also contain some element of fat.
  • The average American child is influenced by television advertisements and tends to eat foods that are advertised there, mostly fast foods and colas. Most of the foods advertised are toxic in nature. These foods have no nutrients.
  • Medical bills have also been on the increase on account of obesity as large amounts of money has to be spent on various obesity related diseases, such as diabetes, cardio-vascular disease, liver, blood pressure etc.
  • Many are trying to lose weight but are unable to do so as they do not know how to lose weight.

It’s so difficult to make that first step in any weight loss journey, especially when you may have an eating disorder.  My advice?  Just do it.  Get up off the couch…..right now….I can see you…..Get up and move!

A little while after lunch I had an afternoon snack:

I munched on some roasted pecans, which were so good, some string cheese and the rest of my apple from lunch 🙂

A little later, my tummy grumbled again and I ate one of these….

Dinner:

It was after 6 when I got home tonight, so I wanted something quick……Breakfast!!!  I made two organic cage free eggs, 1 slice of turkey bacon, 1 slice of provolone cheese and a 100 Calorie Thomas English Muffin.  Um Um Good.  🙂

I also had a cup of green tea, with cream.

It’s been a good food day!  This make me so happy!!  I haven’t craved any sweets or gone past just eating my meals.  I want to be able to eat and eat healthy, but not give into every craving.  The more sugar you eat, the more your body will crave it!

Ok, I am setting here watching Dancing with the Stars and Gavin Degraw just danced……AGH!!  His story made me cry!!  He loves his family so much and they have supported him all the way with his singing career.  Is he single and do you know his number??  lol!  I’m really kidding.  Sort of.

Have a great night and I will see you tomorrow!

  1. I love Gavin Degraw but I havent watched DWTS this season yet! Childhood obeisity is what bothers me the most because they really have no control over it. Its a parents job to tell a child no when they ask to buy twinkies at the store. Kids naturally love to run and play outside and given the chance they will do this over watching tv but tv is just convenient for parents. Not to say I don’t use it if I need 20 minutes to finish up dinner or something but some kids come home from school and watch it until bed, including during dinner. I saw a mom at walmart today, who was very in shape, buy mcdonalds for her overweight kids and then not eat it herself. Parents need to be parents and take care of their kids physical health!

    • I completely agree! I hurt for kids who are overweight or who are struggling with their weight. When they are small the parent is the one who teaches them how to eat. When they are adults they can make their own eating choices, but at least they would have some sort of foundation to stand on!
