Running Update

on December 15, 2012

So a couple of days ago I told you that I would be posting about fitness.  I also wanted to give you an update on my running journey.  Back around the week of Thanksgiving I came down with a yucky illness.  That was nowhere in my head, just in my chest.  Just to give you an update with that, I am still coughing up yucky stuff.  I ended up taking an entire week off from running due to the fact that I was really sick and had zero energy.  Getting back into the running was pretty difficult.  Right after I started feeling a little better, my job changed and now I have to get up earlier and come home a bit later due to having more of a drive.

What I am trying to get to is that I am taking a break from training/running.  Here are the reasons why:

  1. I found myself not being able to commit to the schedule the last couple of weeks due to work
  2. energy levels are low
  3. lung capacity/breathing/stamina
  4. location of treadmill and colder temps (it was outside)
  5. not having proper running gear

These reasons, along with not enough daylight, I have chosen to do this.  I just feel like I need to make some changes before I continue my journey.  Plus, Cait was taking time out of her life to create and send me a schedule and it wasn’t fair to her for me not to fully commit.

**Thanks to my father the treadmill has been moved to a better location.**

For the first time in months I did a 30 minute DVD workout the other day and I literally haven’t been able to walk right for the last three days. My calves are still recovering!  I have also stuck in some Tabata style workouts with some upper body drills.

I will also incorporate some running into my workouts, but not at the extent of what I was doing.

When I ultimately made this decision, I felt horribly guilty.  The beauty of a journey and a healthy lifestyle is that it’s not going to look like everyone else’s.  My body is telling me there needs to be a change.

What did you have for breakfast??

Went to church this morning, but it’s been a lazy kind of Sunday.  I have enjoyed having my feet up…..watching The Holiday with Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Cameron Diaz, and Jack Black.  One of my favorite holiday movies…

I hope you are having a great day!

I’m proud of you for this, Brandi! It’s important to listen to your body and do what you can, which seems to be what you’re doing! No worries that running isn’t at the top of the list right now…you’re going through some major life changes, so be gentle with yourself and look at what you are doing! Seems like more than enough to me 🙂 That pumpkin bread looks sooooooooo good!! I keep thinking about buying it when I go to a non Trader Joes grocery store haha

I’m so glad you are listening to your body – you have to do that, and that’s how you reach your fitness and health goals!

  3. Hang in there. Sometimes life gets in the way, but it is okay. There will always be running. Hopefully you will feel better soon and the craziness of life will slow down.

Oh, please don’t beat yourself up over cutting back on running! I have had to do that at various times, and the nice thing is, it’s always there waiting when you go back to it 🙂 I think it’s better to decide to pause rather than being forced to out of injury, persistent illness, or just hating it so much you can’t stand to do it anymore. You made such amazing progress with running, I am sure it will suit you again in the future 🙂
