Worst Reasons To Work Out

Well hello there Sunday!  What a short and fast weekend!   It was a short weekend, but it was a great one!  My Saturday was a full one that is for sure.  I had to work yesterday, but after work I had to make a stop of Wal-mart to pick up a couple of things and then head to a Baby Shower.  One of the girls that I used to work with is going to have a baby soon, so some of us got together to celebrate that.  It was lots of fun to catch up!  By the time I left the shower, I was pretty hungry so when I got home I made a turkey burger (minus the bun), sweet potato fries, and some broccoli.  Delicious.

Worst Reasons to Work Out:



  • Because you are overweight.  Do you punish yourself with exercise?  There have been many many times that I have felt really guilty from overeating only to get angry at myself and throw in another (unhealthy) workout.  If you do struggle with weight, it’s better to approach working out as part of your lifestyle.  Exercise, working out, and fitness is beneficial, but punishing yourself with working out is not beneficial.   You want to feel strong and have energy, which can have an overall affect on your attitude and mood.
  • To eat whatever you want.  Oh boy have I done this one.  You can out eat any workout plan….If I don’t balance the two, then my workouts aren’t really doing many any good.  Working out can offset calories, but working out should support your already healthy lifestyle.  Don’t outsmart a bad diet.
  • To run away from your problems.  Ahh, stress.  It’s an ugly thing sometimes.  Exercise can be a good stress reliever, but it shouldn’t be used to run away from any issues that you may have.  It is better to deal with any problems that you may have in your life.  Working out can actually help you handle problems as the come about.  It can give you a clear mind so that you can face any problems head on.
  • To energize when you’re lacking sleep.  Energy booster it is, but working out because you haven’t had a lot of sleep can be harmful to your health.  Exercise should add to your overall health, including the quality of your sleep.  It’s really important to listen to your body and know when you need to rest. 
  • To get skinny.  I’ll have to admit, I have done this.  And lets be frank, working out just to get skinny may have an opposite effect.  Everyone’s dream body is different.  Learning to love my body has been a long road.  Do I still have things that I want to work on?  Sure I do, but I want to be healthy and happy, not just get into skinny jeans.  Which I might add, I will never be in.  Do I want to fit in my clothes?  You bet!  I would rather get up feeling great and being comfortable in my body than working out just to be a certain size.

  1. Love that article! I will admit to being guilty of some of those things before, too!

  2. I think everyone works to be skinny, but it isn’t always the right reason. Right now I eat pretty much whatever I want, but marathon training will do that to you. I just need to remember that I can’t eat what I want AFTER the marathon is over. I struggle with that concept. 🙂
