Faith Fitness and Laughter

So yesterday when I finished my workout I drank my usual protein smoothie to refuel my body.  This morning I wanted to share why this is really important when it comes to your workouts and getting the change in your body that you desire.  Keep in my mind that I am in no way an expert or trained in this field.  Just some encouragement to let you know that you can do it!

There are some super cool things going on in your body while you are working out, but the super cool thing is what comes after you work out.  After an intense workout, your body is in a catabolic state.  This basically means that the muscles are breaking down to fuel the body.  There is about a 30 to 60 minute window in which your body optimizes it’s ability to replenish it’s lost energy.  More specifically, muscle and liver glycogen (main source of energy stored in the liver).  It’s during this window that the muscles will begin it’s process of rebuilding and repairing the tissue.  It also replenishes lost fluid and adjusts to the stress of your workout.

What do you refuel your body with?

Well, namely carbs and protein.

Getting enough carbs will restore the glycogen in your liver.  Glycogen in the liver is one of the main fuel sources of a workout.  It’s really important to remember that when you are overweight it’s effecting your liver.  All of your organs really.  Especially if you carry your weight in the midsection.

Good carb sources:

  • breads
  • chocolate milk
  • fruit
  • natural protein bars

And then there is protein.  Protein after an intense workout provides amino acids for the muscles, which ensures a positive protein balance.   Because protein is broken down during your workout, failure to consume and replace this protein can result in muscle loss.

Good protein sources:

  • nuts
  • eggs
  • meat
  • yogurt
  • protein mix powders

When I first started my weight loss journey these were things that I didn’t really think about.  To be honest, I just wanted to lose the weight.  I didn’t care about muscle tone or how to properly fuel my body before and after a workout.  I’ve certainly had to make adjustments along the way, but I can say that I am stronger than I was 10 years ago.

One of the coolest things I love about my journey in fitness and health is learning new things and learning how to do them properly.

I have a long day ahead of me today (8-6), but I am sure it will be a great day.  Smile

One of the things that I was reminded of this week is that I have a tendency to be a doormat.  Yes, I let people walk on me sometimes.  It’s not like I mean to or desire it, but I am not big on conflict and like things to be rosy all of the time.

Something that I also learned this week is that frankly, I’m tired of it.  I think that we should respect each other for the way we are.  When I say that, I am talking about your personality, work ethic, dreams, likes, dislikes.  Things like that.

I am who I am. God created me and He created me uniquely unto no one else.  I am me.  I approach things differently and process things like no one else.

So, lets build each other up instead of tearing each other down.

We aren’t promised the next moment, why would you want to spend it tearing someone down, nitpicking everything about them that you don’t like or that bothers you.  Frankly, it says more about you than the person that bothers you.

I hope you have a great day!!

Yes!! I love the way you ended this post, Brandi 🙂 It put a huge smile on my face to read that you are accepting and loving yourself for who God made you to be…it’s something I’ve finally been discovering this year, too, and I’m pretty content with the person i’m discovering 🙂 And chocolate milk is my FAVORITE way to start refueling after a long run…along with eggs and toast 🙂 best breakfast ever! Have a great weekend, love!!
